Flossing your teeth every day is one of the keys to lifelong dental health, as it removes food particles and plaque the toothbrush cannot reach. However, too many people use this teeth cleaning product incorrectly or do not use it at all, which can eventually contribute to tooth decay, gingivitis, and gum disease. To help you clean your teeth with floss properly, review the following guide.

4 Essential Dental Flossing Tips

1. Make a “C” Shape Around Each Tooth

To floss the right way, remove 18 inches of the filament from its holder and wrap it around your index fingers. You’ll want 1 to 2 inches of floss to work with at a time. Gently rub the filament between your teeth, then make a “C” shape under the tooth to clean below the gumline. Repeat this process until you have cleaned every tooth.

2. Use Clean Sections of Floss

Working with clean sections of the filament ensures thorough results. It prevents you from re-introducing bacteria and plaque to your teeth and gums. If you run out of floss during this teeth cleaning practice , simply remove more from the container instead of reusing what you have. Discard dirty floss since it cannot be saved for reuse.

3. Avoid Snapping the Dental Product

“Snapping” floss refers to forcing it between the teeth and impacting gum tissue. Repeatedly snapping your floss can cause the gums to become tender and swollen. They can also bleed or start receding. If you have trouble getting floss between your teeth, look into alternatives, such as dental tape. Some people find this oral care product easier to slide between each tooth.

4. Floss Before You Brush

Flossing before you brush your teeth allows your toothbrush to easily remove dislodged food particles and plaque, which reduces your risk of gum disease. While you need to spit out the toothpaste, you should not rinse your mouth. Doing so removes the fluoride in the toothpaste that coats your teeth and contributes to remineralized, strong enamel. Teeth with sufficient enamel are less susceptible to sensitivity issues, in addition to tooth decay.
