Many homeowners wait until their air conditioning units give out before scheduling HVAC repair. Thankfully, many AC issues can be identified and fixed before they become worse. If you notice any of the signs below, schedule an appointment with an HVAC technician right away.

When to Schedule Air Conditioning Repair

1. Unpleasant Smells

Foul odors coming from your AC unit can mean one of several issues depending on the smell. A dirty laundry or mildew smell indicates that your AC is clogged and not draining properly. The standing water that accumulates can begin to grow mold or fungus in your machine. This will be circulated back into your home and negatively affect your air quality. Air conditioning units that smell like exhaust fumes or gunpowder usually have a fluid leak or shorted circuit.

2. Strange Noises

The quiet hum of the fan is normal when operating your air conditioner, but any other noise may point to an issue. Loud banging or rattling can mean a loose part in the unit. This can cause damage to the rest of the machine if left alone. A bubbling or gurgling noise could indicate a problem with the coolant circulating in your refrigerant lines.

Squealing usually means your fan belt is wearing down and needs to be replaced. Clicking noises may mean something is blocking the outdoor unit’s fan or that there is an electrical problem in the system. All of these problems will get worse over time if left alone, so contact an HVAC technician right away to fix the issue.

3. High Humidity

Part of an air conditioner’s job is to control indoor humidity levels. The ideal indoor humidity level is between 30 and 50 percent. The air inside your home should not feel dry or muggy. If you notice that your home feels uncomfortably humid, there may be a leak in your air ducts that is preventing moisture from being pulled outside.

High humidity can also increase the risk of mold and mildew inside, which can be harmful to your health. Give an HVAC technician a call if you notice water pooling around the windows, fogging on glass, or a sticky feeling in the air.
