Nickel plating is a proven method for improving the corrosion resistance of steel, aluminum, and a variety of other materials—and it can also create a beautiful, mirrored finish. These days, metal finishing shops use a variety of techniques to create coatings specifically formulated for different applications, from airplane components to silverware. The two most common process, electroless and electrolytic nickel plating, produce very different results, making each better suited to different products.

Choosing a Nickel Plating Process

Electroless Nickel Plating

nickel platingAfter a part is submerged in a specially formulated solution, a chemical reaction creates a permanent bond with the surface layer of the object. These bonded surfaces are much more durable than untreated metal and are resistant to corrosion, friction, and excess heat. Electroless nickel is often used in industrial applications, including caustic or extremely hazardous environments, and the oil and gas industry. Some electroless processes also product non-conductive parts, which can be used to shield sensitive electronic parts from electromagnetic fields.

Electrolytic Nickel Plating

This more traditional form of plating uses a mild electrical current to bond nickel to the surface of an object. Unlike the electroless method, electrolytic plating produces an aesthetically pleasing surface that can be easily polished to a high shine, although it doesn’t provide much additional strength. Auto parts, household appliances, light fixtures, and other objects that need a decorative surface will usually benefit from electrolytic plating, although the aerospace industry sometimes uses it to create components that absorb heat and light.
