Ensuring your HVAC system is prepared for the winter months will keep your home comfortable when temperatures drop. It’s important to work with your HVAC contractor to keep the system running efficiently. Here are a few tips for getting your heat pump ready for winter.

How to Prepare Your Heat Pump for Cooler Weather

1. Change Thermostat Settings

Heat pumps typically have three settings: cool, heat, and emergency heat. When turning on the heat for the first time, switch your heat pump from cool to heat mode.

Avoid turning on the emergency heat unless your heat pump needs repair or is iced over. By turning on the heat, warm air will efficiently spread into your home.

2. Remove Debris & Clutter From Heat Pump Area

These items can get caught in the equipment, causing clogs and other damage. For better protection, ask your HVAC contractor to install a cover to hinder debris from falling onto the heat pump unit.

3. Change the Heat Pump Filter

Air filters prevent dust and debris from collecting in your furnace. Depending on the type of HVAC system you have and the degree of dirt buildup, your air filter needs to be changed every one to six months.

Trapped dust can cause operational issues like short cycling, frequent breakdowns, and a shortened life span of the system. Cleaning and maintenance from your HVAC contractor can prevent dirty air filters that restrict airflow and cause your heat pump system to work harder.
