For homes that solely rely on a water well for their daily needs, a faulty system can have serious repercussions. Without water flowing from your fixtures, you’ll have a rough time with cleaning, cooking, washing, and other activities. A lack of water can occur because of a well pump malfunction, but it can also be due to a dry spell. Here’s what you need to know.

4 Reasons You’re Not Getting Water From Your Well

1. No Power

All water wells come with pump systems to draw out groundwater. Since most of these pumps are powered by electricity, a power outage often results in a no-water scenario, especially if there’s no backup generator or battery. If there is power and there’s still no water coming out, check that the pressure switch is on. Next, examine the circuit breaker—if it tripped, reset it. Have the breaker checked by a technician if it trips frequently.

2. Faulty Pressure Switch

This switch automatically turns on whenever there’s a drop in water pressure in the tank. Without a functional pressure switch, the motor pump will not turn on to pull water from the ground. Try jiggling the area around the pressure switch, and if that works, it means there’s a loose connection or contact somewhere. Otherwise, call for professional assistance.

3. Broken Pump Controller

For controllers that are installed outside the tank, try replacing them if you’re handy. However, it’s not a guarantee that this will solve the problem. Err on the safe side by having a repair technician come in and take a look.

4. Dry Spell

Another possible reason for not getting water from the well is drought. Older or shallow water wells tend to dry up during drought seasons. Keep in mind that rainwater seeping through the soil replenishes underground aquifers. With little to no rainfall, there’s less chance of restoring the groundwater supply. To restore your supply, you might need to drill deeper or build a new well.
