Getting a used MacBook® for school will help you to stay on top of homework, research, and other class projects with style and plenty of processing power. However, when you start shopping, you’ll discover a variety of models with unique characteristics that might make them more suited to a particular type of educational focus. Here's a look at how to determine which one will meet your needs.

How to Choose a Used MacBook That Meets Your Educational Needs

1. Portability

Since you’ll be toting your laptop back and forth across campus every day, it should be relatively easy to carry. Ideally, this means it’s small enough to fit into your backpack or satchel along with any books without adding too much extra weight. An 11-inch to 13-inch screen will offer the best mix of portability and general use.

The 12-inch MacBook was created with this exact purpose in mind, but if you're interested in a model that offers a bit more bang, consider a 13-inch MacBook Air®. It's sleek and lightweight, and the last few editions also feature the famous Retina® display. The 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro® and Air editions also include the Apple® M1 chip, which makes them 3.5 times faster than their earlier counterparts, but the Air remains lighter.

2. Performance

If you're willing to carry around a little more weight, a larger MacBook will often have an elite processor and higher-end graphics. The 16-inch MacBook Pro hasn’t been updated to the M series, but the Core I9 processor and 3072-by-1920 resolution provide the optimal field for doing any type of schoolwork and handling various programs at once.

Some base laptop models come with 4 gigabytes of RAM, but you can easily upgrade to 16 or 32GB for the most efficiency. The long battery life also means you can make it through the school day without having to hunt for an electrical outlet around campus.

3. Resolution

Unless you need to use design applications, you probably won’t notice much difference in MacBook displays. However, if you're an artist, engineer, photographer, or design student, the monitor resolution is just as important as the processor. The 13-inch MacBook Air has a colorful, high-resolution 2500-by-1600 screen, but some Pro displays are noticeably a bit better at 2880 by 1800.
