There’s a common misconception that Apple® products, including Mac® computers, are unable to get viruses. While it’s less common for these devices to be infected by viruses and other types of malware, it’s not impossible either. Here’s a closer look at the different types of malware to look out for as well as how to protect your used MacBook® and other devices.

Types of Viruses & Malware

Malware encompasses a broad category of threats against your Mac. Viruses are just one type of malware that can cause damage.

  • Macro Viruses – Macs can run Microsoft Office® programs, including Word®. When a Word file contains infected macros, they’ll wreak havoc on your computer. Some versions attempt to access webcams, while others reformat hard drives or create new files.
  • Spyware – You may not even know you’re infected with spyware, as this malware is designed to work behind the scenes. Its primary goal is to locate information and relay it to the creator of the malware.
  • Trojans – Trojans appear to be innocuous programs but actually contain damaging viruses. These unwelcome guests can contain different types of malware depending on the goal.
  • Ransomware – When your Mac is infected by ransomware, you’ll lose control of your computer until you comply with the hacker’s demands, which is where the name comes from. This typically involves paying a ransom in cryptocurrency to prevent the monies from being tracked.

How to Tell if Your Computer Is Infected

When you go online, you may notice constant pop-ups enticing you to take some action. You may also be asked to download a new antivirus program.

Be wary of virus notices that seem to come directly from Apple. The macOS will not notify you that your computer has been infected, and devices don’t come loaded with antivirus software. As a result, any notices regarding viruses being sent from Apple are likely to be malware.
