There are many ways to discourage graffiti on your business’s exterior walls, including signage, video surveillance equipment, and anti-graffiti coatings. There are two types of anti-graffiti coatings available from painting contractors: sacrificial and non-sacrificial. Both types of anti-graffiti coatings lend themselves to various materials, including brick, concrete, stone, plastic, and metal. Learn about both options here to determine what’s best for your business.

What is Sacrificial Anti-Graffiti Coating?

Sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings are virtually undetectable clear coatings. The polymer coating is not permanent and lasts for one to two graffiti removal projects. It creates a barrier that prevents spray paint from adhering to your building’s exterior walls and gets washed off along with the graffiti. Because the clear polymer features wax, acrylate, or biopolymer materials, it creates a weak bond with the surface that prevents spray paint absorption but does not require serious effort to remove.

You or a painting contractor must subsequently apply a new coating after the first or second round of graffiti removal, depending on whether the product lasts for one or two washings. Since you need to reapply the product, it is ideal for buildings in a low-vandalism area.

What is Non-Sacrificial Anti-Graffiti Coating?

The non-sacrificial option is a water-based, co-polymer, or silicone product available in high to low-gloss options. Like its sacrificial counterpart, it creates a protective barrier between spray paint and your exterior wall. However, it does not wash off along with the graffiti. The durable product remains on the wall after one application and easily withstands solvents that remove graffiti paint quickly and easily.

While non-sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings cost more upfront than sacrificial versions, their longevity prevents paying for additional applications. If your business is in a community with an ongoing graffiti problem, a non-sacrificial coating is a worthwhile investment.
