When you lose your teeth due to injury or decay, and replacing them with a bridge or dentures isn’t practical, dental implants may be an option. During this surgical procedure, the missing tooth is replaced with a metal post and an artificial tooth. Because the implant fuses with your jawbone, it’s a permanent solution that prevents many of the drawbacks of other prosthodontics, such as dentures and bridges.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are metal posts that are surgically implanted into your gums, replacing the root of the missing teeth. During the healing process, the jawbones heal around the screw-like titanium posts, making a permanent base for artificial teeth, which are added after the bone heals. This can make it more comfortable to wear dentures or bridges, as they will not shift in your mouth. It’s also a good option for replacing a single tooth.

What Are The Different Types of Dental Implants?

dental implantsDental implants are available in two types: endosteal implants, which are surgically implanted into the jawbone, and subperiosteal implants, which involve implanting a metal frame under the gum line, which then fuses to the jawbone.

Both types of implants typically require several procedures. Endosteal implants, for instance, begin with a procedure to put in the implant, followed by a second procedure to add a post after the gums heal. Finally, the artificial tooth is added after the post incisions heal. The process is similar for subperiosteal implants, but instead of an individual tooth replacement, a bridge with several teeth is mounted to the posts on either end of the frame.

What Is a Dental Implant Procedure Like?

Having dental implants is a surgical procedure, and there is some recovery involved. In many cases, the entire process can take several months. It usually begins with the removal of the damaged teeth if necessary, followed by jawbone preparation and grafting. After the implant is placed, you’ll need to wait for the bone to heal around the implant before the posts and artificial teeth can be placed. There is often some pain and discomfort for a few days after each procedure, as well as a risk of infection, but with proper care and maintenance, the recovery periods only last for a few days at a time.
