What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is estimated to affect 10% of women during their reproductive years. This common disorder causes tissue similar to the uterine lining, or endometrium, to grow on the outside of the uterine cavity. It can cause infertility and discomfort problems, so if you suspect you may have endometriosis you should see your OB-GYN immediately.
A Guide to Endometriosis
What Happens
The endometrial tissue can grow on the ovaries, bowel, or tissue that lines the pelvis. This growth is called an endometrial implant. When the menstrual cycle causes hormonal changes within the body, those hormones affect the implant.
The tissue becomes inflamed and painful as it grows, thickens, and breaks down. Scars may form, and the broken-down tissue can become trapped in the pelvis.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms can range from very mild to severe, and the level of discomfort doesn’t necessarily reflect the condition’s severity. For example, someone with extreme pain may only have a mild case of the condition.
The most common symptom is a pain in the pelvic region. Other symptoms occur around menstruation, so they are often mistaken for menstrual symptoms. These include painful periods, cramping, heavy bleeding or spotting between periods, and lower back pain. Infertility is another common, but less obvious, symptom.
How It’s Treated
Your doctor will determine your treatment plan based on the severity of the condition and where the growth is occurring. Hormone therapy or hormonal contraceptives can regulate monthly hormonal changes to stop the condition’s progression and manage symptoms.
In extreme cases or when you are trying to get pregnant, a conservative surgery can remove the growths without touching the reproductive organs.
