Sonohysterography, also known as hysterosonography, is a procedure that uses sound waves to produce imaging of a uterus. This allows the doctor to examine the uterus’s structure and lining and diagnose a range of issues, ranging from unexplained bleeding to infertility. If your doctor has recommended this test, you should know what to expect and how to prepare.

Infertility Testing Guide to a Sonohysterogram

What to Expect

This noninvasive test is done in your OB-GYN’s office and is typically performed a week after you start your period and when you are not bleeding. You will be asked to urinate first, so your bladder is empty. They will then insert a special ultrasound probe into the vagina, which emits sound waves to create a picture of the uterine lining.

The doctor then inserts a speculum, using a swab to clean the interior of the cervix.  They insert a tube to send fluid through the cervical opening, which makes the uterine lining easier to image.

Finally, the main ultrasound is performed with the same ultrasound probe, while more fluid is sent into the uterus. Some patients experience some light cramping with the fluid. The sound waves from the probe will create an accurate image of the uterus and the way the fluid flows into the fallopian tubes. The entire process usually takes about 30 minutes.

How to Prepare

infertilityYou can prepare by wearing comfortable and loose-fitting clothing. Be prepared to remove your clothing and jewelry, as you will be asked to change into a gown for the test. If you’re concerned about discomfort, your doctor may tell you to take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain medication such as ibuprofen.

There may be slight bleeding and cramping afterward, which are the only side effects or risks to be aware of. If you experience anything else after the procedure, you should tell your doctor.
