Starting a family is a dream for many couples. Unfortunately, it isn’t easy for everyone, and many individuals struggle with infertility. The good news is that while various factors can cause female and male infertility, some of these are within your control. One of these is tobacco use. Here is what you should know about how smoking can lead to infertility and how to quit.

A Guide to Tobacco Use & Infertility

Women

Research indicates it can take women who smoke longer to conceive compared to non-smokers. In part, this is because toxic cigarette smoke exposure can reduce egg viability. Smoking can also cause fallopian tube blockages, which can prevent sperm from fertilizing eggs and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. Tobacco use can harm the developing fetus as well and increase the chances of miscarriage. Furthermore, women who smoke tend to experience menopause one to four years earlier than their non-smoking counterparts.

Men

In men, smoking reduces sperm count and motility. The chemicals in cigarettes can also alter sperm shape, inhibiting a sperm’s ability to fertilize eggs.

Like women, men who smoke tend to have difficulty conceiving even with IVF (in vitro fertilization) and other fertility-enhancing techniques. Research indicates both men and women who use tobacco are almost twice as likely to experience infertility than non-smokers.

How to Quit

Quitting smoking can increase your chances of conceiving and carrying a pregnancy to term. While it’s not easy, having a support system can help. Choose a date to quit and let your friends and family know of your plan. Throw away all of your cigarettes, lighters, ashtrays, and other smoking paraphernalia.

You’ll also want to change your routine to replace smoke breaks with healthy habits. Drinking tea or coffee, chewing gum, and going for walks instead of smoking a cigarette can help. You may also want to try meditation, yoga, or other forms of mindfulness and stress-reduction practice.

Consider rewarding yourself when you hit milestones, such as a day, a week, and a month tobacco-free, and celebrate with a healthy treat such as a massage, dessert, or dinner out.
