One of the simplest maintenance tasks drivers can do is to replace the tires. Because they’re responsible for properly gripping the road, new tires are essential for a safe ride. If they’re worn down, accurate steering and prompt braking become difficult. Rain and snow exacerbate this, where hydroplaning is a risk. With just a few signs to keep track of, you’ll know when to replace your tires.

5 Signs You Need New Tires

1. Shoulder or Side

When the outside edges of a tire are worn down, but the center treads are in good condition, there is typically an alignment issue. Not only does this diminish the overall lifespan of the tire, but it could also lead to a blowout.

On the other hand, if the wear is in the center, you’re probably driving with over-inflated tires. This reduces longevity, and your driving experience will be bumpier.

3. Feathered

Unlike the previous two, this type of wear pertains to individual tread blocks instead of a general area. One side of a tread will be smooth while the other retains its sharpness. It’s more subtle than the shoulder or center wear, and it’s easier to feel it than see it. The usual cause is wheel misalignment or aggressive corner turning.

4. Flat Spot

When there are parts of a tire that are smooth and worn down, but it doesn’t extend all the way around, it’s generally due to hard, abrupt braking. If you don’t remember doing that intentionally and the damage looks significant, you may need new brake pads as well as new tires.

5. Cupped

If you see little concave bumps on the tire or feel an uncomfortable bounce as you drive, you probably have cupped wear. These are usually caused by problems with a shock absorber or the suspension system as a whole.
