Homeowners with a central AC unit have an outdoor condenser. The condenser absorbs heat from the air and releases it outside, which keeps your interiors cool and comfortable. Landscaping around the condenser is an important consideration, as anything that blocks the flow of air can also affect operation. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to keep your air conditioner running all summer long.

How to Landscape Around Your Exterior AC Unit

1. Keep Plants & Trees Away

Keep all plant life at least three feet away from air conditioning equipment. This will prevent debris, such as twigs, leaves, and branches, from making its way inside the unit. Should the condenser become clogged, the system will experience increased wear and tear, leading to expensive repairs.

2. Increase Shade Around the Condenser

Constant UV exposure causes equipment to heat up on hot days, making it harder for the system to cool the air that is also getting heated by the sun. While still keeping the above tip in mind, increasing shade around the condenser can increase energy efficiency by approximately 10 percent. Tall shrubs are a good shade option in your backyard. They can be placed far enough away from the equipment to prevent blocked airflow, but they will still provide an ample amount of shade to keep the AC cool.

3. Install a Fixture or Screen

While the outdoor AC unit plays a crucial function in home comfort during the summer, you might not be happy about how the equipment clashes with the rest of your landscaping. In this case, installing an attractive screen or lattice around it serves two purposes. First, it conceals the condenser for a more aesthetically pleasing look. Second, it prevents plant debris from making its way into the equipment and causing issues.
