Across the country, there are thousands of campsites that cater to or accommodate RV owners on the vacation of their dreams. If you’re new to RVing, you may be unsure what you need to do when getting settled after you arrive at the campground. Here are a few essential tips to help you get set up.
How to Set Up at an RV Campsite
1. Park and Position Your Vehicle
First, make your way to a free or predesignated space, and aim for somewhere with level, even ground. In more crowded parks, it can be difficult to park safely and competently if you’re new to larger vehicles. If this is the case, ask a passenger or a fellow RVer to guide you into place.
Make sure your slide-outs and awnings can be extended fully without striking any nearby vehicles or objects. You should also be able to ensure the leveling jacks rest on the ground fully and evenly.
2. Hook Up the Power
Next, locate the nearest electrical supply point. Before connecting your vehicle, make sure the breaker is turned completely off. First, connect the power supply cables to your RV, then to the power supply, using any adapters necessary. Once everything is properly and securely connected, turn the breaker back on to start receiving power.
3. Hook Up the Water
Once your power is set up, connect the water supply line to the nearest supply point and then to your RV. Ask campsite staff whether their water is supplied from local municipal systems or through tanks. You may want to invest in a pressure regulator and a filter to ensure the water is as clean and fresh as possible and to limit unnecessary usage.
4. Hook Up to the Sewage System
Put on a pair of gloves and find the sewage hookup for your site. First, open the campground sewage cap and connect the hose to it before connecting it to your RV. Twist the clamp at the end of the hose to ensure that the connection is secure, and make sure the sewage line slopes downward so gravity can carry the waste away. Once it’s hooked up, run the sewage first, and then run the gray water.
