Developing social skills early in life is essential to long-term success in both educational and career environments. However, many kids struggle with making friends and effectively communicating with new people. It’s particularly challenging for toddlers without siblings or close relatives who are a similar age. If your little one is preparing to enter day care or preschool for the first time, follow these three tips to help with the transition.

How to Help Toddlers Socialize

1. Role Play

Practicing real-world situations can help build a child’s confidence. Such role play with family members occurs in a safe environment with people they’re already comfortable with. As a result, they can get over their nerves and learn new skills without the stress of strangers, which can be replicated on the big day.

Set the stage for your little one by choosing characters, or try dolls and other toys to lead the scenario with the parent playing the role of a shy child first. Start by pretending to walk into their day care or preschool classroom for the first time, and focus on the basics, like what to say and do. Then switch roles to give them a try.

2. Plan Playdates

One-on-one socializing is often more comfortable for shy kids than taking on a large group environment. For that reason, consider arranging playdates with friends, family, or even co-workers that have a child the same age.

During the meetup, it’s okay to lead communication as the kids warm up together by asking each of them questions and finding common ground, such as a love for dinosaurs.

3. Encourage Communication

Holding emotions, like fear and anxiety, inside can end up making new situations even more daunting. Toddlers are also at an age when they’re learning to communicate feelings, so voicing their concerns can be challenging. As such, parents may want to take the lead by sharing their own experiences of shyness and fear related to work or social events.

Use the explanations as a starting point to help your child label and share their own experience, followed by reassuring them that such reactions are normal and not a big deal. Such communication may even help spotlight an underlying issue, like an embarrassment about a speech issue.
