Dropping your iPhone® into the tub or watching it fall into a sink can be a heart-stopping experience, but it’s not necessarily a death sentence for your valuable Apple® device. Some of the newer models are designed to withstand total submersion, but even older devices can be dried out if you act quickly. If your iPhone has gotten wet, here are a few tips that may help save your device.

3 Steps for Saving a Wet iPhone

1. Dry the Outside

Once you have the phone out of the water, remove the case and take out the SIM card. This gives little drops of water fewer places to hide and speeds up the evaporation process. You might be tempted to power it on to see if it still works, but this can be a fatal error, causing short circuits that could ruin a salvageable device. Instead, carefully wipe down the exterior with a soft cloth and move on to step two.

2. Turn It Off

This little surge of power can cause shorts inside your Apple device, but the risk is higher if you start getting notifications or phone calls. Neither approach is perfect, but turning it off is usually the safer approach.

3. Dry the Interior

Desiccants pull moisture out of the interior of your phone without the heat that could damage delicate components. One popular option is covering the phone in uncooked rice for 48 hours, but this might leave dust in the ports or speaker. Silica packets, which usually come packaged in electronics, leather goods, and some food items, are often a cleaner, more effective choice for rescuing a drowned Apple device.
