If you’re like many people, you use your laptop a lot. No one wants to deal with computer repairs for an overheating laptop during finals week or a sluggish system while streaming a movie on Netflix®. But you might be surprised to learn that some of your habits — like binge-watching your favorite shows in bed — can unintentionally lead to computer problems.

Computer Habits to Avoid

1. Not Updating Your Anti-Virus Software

Computers are continuously being threatened by new viruses, malware, and adware on a daily basis. Fortunately, anti-virus programs release updates regularly to combat these new threats. Make sure you have the best line of defense by downloading software updates when they become available. Program your software to automatically check for updates, and click “yes” when the prompts come up instead of ignoring them until later.

2. Keeping Your Laptop Plugged In

Once your laptop is fully charged, unplug it. Keeping your computer continuously plugged in will reduce the life span of your battery. Instead, allow the battery to drain before recharging it. This will prolong the life of your battery, as well as reduce wear on your charger.

3. Using Your Computer In Bed

computer-repair-aurora-coIf you habitually bring your laptop with you to bed, you’re putting it at risk of overheating. On most laptops, the fan is located beneath the screen hinge. When you use a laptop in bed (or on top of another soft surface, like the couch), you’re blocking the airflow this area needs to keep your device cool. This will cause your fan to work even harder — you can often hear this as a loud whirring sound.
