Many people become reliant on Apple® technology. When something like a forgotten password interrupts your access to a device, it’s easy to panic about not being able to use apps and data. It’s always smart to write your passwords down somewhere, but if you lose it, you might have to reset the device. Here’s how to do this for a pre-owned Apple product.

Erase the Device With iTunes

Pre-Owned Apple ProductsIf you’re able to connect the device to iTunes® on your computer, let it sync and create a backup of your device before you begin the reset. If iTunes asks for a password to proceed with this, then try another computer. If you still have no luck, then you’ll need to skip this step and click the button to restore the device. Later, a setup screen will appear, and you’ll have the option to restore it from the backup you made earlier.

Erase the Device With Recovery Mode

If you’ve never synced your product with iTunes before, then you’ll have to use recovery mode. This means you’ll lose all the settings and data, including the password, but you’ll be able to start using the device again. Once it’s plugged into your computer and connected to iTunes, begin a forced restart.

This looks different for different generations of products, but in general, it involves pressing a combination of buttons on the device. On iPhone®8 through iPhone X, for example, you’ll need to quickly press and hold the volume up and down buttons and the side button. After a few moments, the recovery-mode screen will appear, giving you directions for the process.
