MacBook laptops are not designed to be immersed in water. If you spill a drink on your computer or drop it in a puddle, you need to act quickly to salvage it. You may need to seek out professional repair service or replace your device, but these steps may help you get more out of your current device if you act right away.

What to Do if Your MacBook Laptop Gets Wet

1. Disconnect & Turn Off Everything

Depending on the specifics of the incident, you may need to cut power to that area before picking up your computer to prevent electric shock. Once you have your own safety covered, make sure the computer is turned off and unplugged. If possible, remove any extras like hard drives and the battery so those parts don’t get damaged as well. It’s important to isolate the device as soon as possible, and we can not stress enough the importance of not trying to turn it on.

2. Dry Off Visible Water

When you get to the keyboard, use a Q-tip or absorbent paper towel to get in between the keys as effectively as you can. From there, use gravity to your advantage by flipping the computer upside down, propping it into an upside-down V shape. You need to leave it to dry out for days without turning it on, so be patient.

3. Try the Rice Trick

You may also place the computer in a bag with anything that’s designed to absorb moisture, like uncooked rice, kitty litter, or silica gel packets. It’s best to leave it in for several days at a time. This trick is popular with cell phones, but you’ll need a lot more to do it with a computer. It’s also not guaranteed to work, but you need to let it sit and dry out for at least two days anyway, so if you have extra rice or silica lying around, you may as well try.
