Whether you're expecting your first child or you're adding another member to a growing family, pregnancy is an exciting time. Those special nine months are also crucial to the health of both you and your baby. What's more, pregnancy makes you more prone to gum disease, sores, and lumps, so routine visits to the dentist and a proper oral hygiene routine are important health care steps to ensure any issues are mitigated before they start or worsen.

Do:

Tell your dentist you're pregnant

dentist

A dentist can't provide full and proper care without all the necessary information. Since pregnancy puts a person at higher risk for gum disease and mouth growths, referred to as "pregnancy tumors," a dentist will want to ensure you take the proper precautions to lower your chances of getting these conditions.

Use an ADA-approved toothpaste

The ADA takes certain precautions into consideration during their approval process, and pregnancy is one of them. Any toothpaste with the ADA seal of approval is guaranteed to be safe for you and your baby, especially when fluoride is present, because it will ensure you receive the maximum-level of hygiene. It's important not to swallow any of this toothpaste, however, since it might be harmful to the baby.

Don't:

Undergo X-rays

X-rays can expose the baby to radiation, which can lead to miscarriage, premature birth, and defects. Since your dentist will be aware of any pregnancy, they will know not to conduct X-rays while you're expecting. Instead, other tests can be conducted to garner similar results.

Neglect oral pain

Pregnancy makes the body change and shift in unexpected ways, but it's important not to ignore any strange or uncomfortable situations. If there's any pain or discomfort in your gums, mouth, or teeth, it's best to visit a dentist right away. Without proper treatment, an oral condition can worsen and spread, making for more pain and exposing your baby to unnecessary bacteria or illness.
