Your clothes dryer is an important household appliance, making laundry day efficient and convenient. Proper maintenance is vital to ensure your dryer is clean, functioning, and safe every time. Below are a few essential tips to remember and when to schedule dryer repair

A Guide to Dryer Maintenance

1. Empty the Lint

The lint trap or screen collects lint as clothes tumble through the drying cycle. Make sure this area is cleared after every use to ensure good airflow and to stop your appliance from overheating. Annually or biannually based on usage, vacuum the area around the lint filter for any particles that may have escaped or gotten stuck in the lint screen chamber.

Check behind the dryer itself for any lint accumulation. These particles are highly flammable, and combined with the high heat of this appliance, the risk of fire increases if there is a buildup.

2. Check the Exhaust Vent

Your dryer’s exhaust should vent outside your home. If it routes to an attic or crawlspace, call a dryer repair team to change its path. For exhaust vents directed outside, check that there is air flowing while the dryer is on.

When there is no air coming out, there may be a clog in the duct that needs purging. A professional team can disassemble and clear away whatever is blocking it.

3. Change the Hose

Some dryer hoses are made from white vinyl, but these are not safe for use, mainly because they overheat more easily and restrict airflow. If your appliance has this component, have it swapped out with an aluminum hose, which is less restrictive, allows for optimal airflow, and reduces the risk of overheating.

4. Call for Repairs & Cleaning

Dryer repair and regular cleaning will keep your appliance in top shape for longer. Every one to three years, schedule professional cleaning so that experts can open up each area and thoroughly purge lint buildup.

If you aren’t sure when to schedule it, note how long each cycle is taking. If it is longer than usual, you may have a clog and need dryer repair.
