Dishwashers help you avoid the long, tedious process of washing all the dishes by hand. But over time, your dishwasher will accumulate food, bits of glass, and food debris that can keep it from cleaning as thoroughly as it should. If these blockages aren’t handled, they can lead to an urgent and costly appliance repair. Here are some ways to keep the appliance clean using simple household items.
3 Steps to Clean Your Dishwasher
1. Clean the Filter
There is a filter in your dishwasher to keep larger food chunks and other debris from going down the drainage pipe and causing blockages. This filter is underneath the spray arm in the bottom of the unit, and to access it, you’ll likely need to remove the bottom rack of the dishwasher. You may be able to pull the filter out, but it may need to be unlocked first. If you aren’t sure, check your manual or manufacturer’s instructions on removing the filter. Don’t force it, as you don't want to create the need for an appliance repair. Once the filter is out, use a toothbrush to remove debris.
2. Use Vinegar
Fill a glass measuring cup with 16 ounces of white vinegar and place it upright on the lowest rack. Run a normal cycle with the heated dry option turned on. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which is an organic compound capable of killing bacteria and dissolving deposits, dirt, and grease.
3. Use Baking Soda
After the dishwasher is finished cleaning with the vinegar, cover the bottom of the appliance with baking soda and run the unit on a hot water cycle. Baking soda is similar to vinegar in that it has abrasive and grease-cutting properties, but it is also capable of absorbing and neutralizing bad odors. The baking soda will take care of foul odors from leftover food that the vinegar didn’t eliminate.
