Nothing is quite as comforting as the cozy scent of freshly washed laundry. However, that delightful fragrance can be rudely interrupted if your washing machine is giving off foul odors. Here are a few common causes of this problem and if washing machine repair could help restore the sweet smell of your laundry.

What Are the Causes of Washing Machine Odors?

1. Too Much Detergent

Over time, detergents can cause a sticky film to build up between the drums of the washer, which attracts dirt and odor-causing bacteria. This problem can be common in high efficiency (HE) washers which use less water. It can also occur if you tend to use the cold-water setting, because most detergents are made to break down in warm temperatures. Using low-sudsing detergents designed for HE machines can help avoid a smelly build-up.

Running your machine's "Clean Washer" cycle at least once every 90 days can keep the drums clean. If it doesn't have a specific cleaning cycle, run its regular cycle empty using hot water and a quarter cup of baking soda and two cups of vinegar to dissolve sticky residues. Avoid using bleach to clean a smelly washer since it can damage hoses and result in costly washing machine repairs.

2. Clogged Drain Pump

A slow drain pump not only causes foul odors in your machine, but it can also increase the time it takes to complete a wash cycle, reduce its efficiency, and even cause it to stop working altogether. Small items like coins, buttons, and lint can work their way into the pump, slowing or blocking the flow of water and preventing the machine from drying out after use. The buildup of excess moisture leads to smelly mold and mildew.

Some machines have a trap to catch small items before they reach the pump. Check your owner's manual for instructions on how to clear it. If your machine doesn't have a trap or the problem persists after you have cleared it, a washing machine repair service can disassemble the unit to find and remove the clog.

3. Clogged Sewer Pipe

If the smell is emanating from the standpipe behind your washer, pouring about a gallon of hot, soapy water down the standpipe can help ensure the P-trap is clear and working properly. If the odor persists, however, it could indicate the line connecting your home to the sewer system is clogged. This could result in other plumbing problems such as backed-up toilets and clogged sinks. Contact a plumber to solve the issue as soon as possible.
