A quality microwave could last up to a decade with proper maintenance. If it begins acting up before that time, appliance repair might be a more economical alternative to a full replacement. Here are some signs that your microwave is due for professional repair.

Signs It’s Time for Microwave Repairs

1. Unusual Sounds

Even the newest models with quiet operation still make some noise while in use. Yet, if your microwave is unusually loud all of a sudden, take note. This could indicate a problem with a mechanical component, such as the drive motor. On the other hand, rattling or scraping sounds could mean a part has come loose, and will need to be repaired or replaced.

2. Burning Odors

Appliances should never generate burning odors, as this usually means there’s a wiring problem. Sometimes, microwaves can smell like burnt plastic if a wire has become exposed and begun melting nearby components. If you’ve ruled out an object that’s melted inside the microwave from improper use, call for appliance repair before using the device again to avoid the possibility of a fire.

3. Immobile Turntable

The turntable’s spinning motion is what enables a microwave to heat food thoroughly and evenly. There are several components within this system, including a drive motor, plate, drive coupler, and roller guide. If any of these parts are compromised, it can prevent the turntable from spinning and impact how your food gets heated.

4. No Heat

If your microwave runs but your food still feels cold afterwards, the issue could be with the magnetron. This component is an oscillator which emits electrons to generate the microwave energy. Sometimes, a faulty magnetron will warrant a full replacement, but depending on the exact issue, it’s possible appliance repair will remedy the issue.

5. Insufficient Seal

Typically, a microwave won’t run if the door can’t shut all the way. Even if it does run, an improper seal will diminish the efficiency of your appliance. Seal issues are common in microwaves, since the device may be opened and closed dozens of times a day in larger families. Fortunately, the seal can typically be repaired or replaced by a professional.
