Purchasing a new boat is an excellent investment if you like spending time with friends and family on the water. However, docking a vessel in a crowded marina can be tricky for inexperienced boaters. If you recently bought a new boat but don't feel confident about docking it, the following tips can make it easier.

How to Dock Your New Boat

1. Go Slow

Even after you gain experience maneuvering your boat around the marina, you still want to take things slow. Otherwise, you could misjudge the distance between your vessel and the dock or other boats and cause an accident. By reducing your speed to a minimum, you will retain control of the craft and make turns without hitting anything.

2. Reduce Sail Area

Sail areas are parts of the boat that can catch the wind, including windows and cabin bulkheads. When there is too much sail area, it causes the vessel to move slowly, but it will be tougher to steer. You can relieve wind pressure and make it easier to keep the boat on course by opening all the windows before docking. This lets the wind pass through instead of applying force to the surface.

3. Apply Short Bursts of Power

Slowly moving the boat is necessary to prevent hitting the dock, but it needs extra power from the engine to adjust to wind speed and water current. Both currents and wind make it difficult to steer, especially when moving at low speeds. Attempting to dock with full engine power makes steering difficult, but you can maintain optimal control by applying short bursts of power. Before engaging the motor, turn the boat's steering wheel to prevent the vessel from moving too quickly.
