Zoom!® whitening is an effective way to remove surface stains and whiten teeth multiple shades in just one visit to the dentist. However, what you do in the months following the treatment will impact how effective the whitening is. Knowing what to do and what not to do will prevent new stains from forming. Follow the tips below to prolong the whitening treatment.

Do:

Quit tobacco products.

Cigarettes and chew contain tar and other chemicals that yellow the teeth. Your teeth are extra sensitive immediately following the Zoom! whitening treatment, so avoid any tobacco products in the 24 hours following the treatment. After that, it's best to quit smoking altogether, as it will help your teeth stay whiter longer.

Schedule touch-ups.

The effects of Zoom! whitening generally last around 9 to 18 months with proper care, including diligent brushing and flossing. After that time period, schedule another treatment for a touch-up. Schedule it in advance to keep your teeth beautiful over the years.

Don't:

Drink beverages that stain.

Dark or acidic beverages can stain teeth, so avoid or limit your consumption of these drinks. These beverages include coffee, tea, beer, fruit juice, soda, and red wine. If you do need to drink them, use a straw when possible, as this moves the staining liquid safely past the front of the teeth.

Use abrasive dental products.

Hard-bristled toothbrushes and abrasive toothpastes can damage the enamel and make teeth sensitive. Teeth are particularly sensitive for a few days after a whitening treatment, so switch to a soft-bristled brush and a smooth toothpaste.

Continuing to use the non-abrasive products throughout the years will prevent premature enamel wear from occurring, so you can continue to use whitening treatments without damaging the teeth.
