Different Styles of Windows
When you make the decision to get new windows in your home, it is certainly an exciting time, however you do not want to just choose a window that looks nice, you want to consider; function, efficiency, price and maintenance in the style of window you put into your home. Here is a guide on some of the most popular window styles that Madison Vinyl offers.
Double and Single Hung Windows
These windows are quite popular, and slide vertically to open. Single hung windows have only one sash that moves while the other is fixed, or stationary. In a double hung window, both sashes are operable. These windows are easy to use and provide effective insulation. Additionally, they are space savers as they do no protrude inside or outside the home. They are one of the most affordable window styles on the market. A disadvantage of both single and double hung windows is that you can only ever open one sash, or half the window for ventilation.
Casement Windows
Casement windows contain a sash that is hinged on one side and that swings outward. You can operate this style window with just one hand by using a hand crank. This style also allows you to have natural light and maximum ventilation. If you live in a windy area, casement windows are a good choice because as the wind blows against the sash, it tightens the seal. These windows are easy to secure and because they open completely, they are also an easy escape route in case of an emergency. A drawback of casement windows is that there are lots of moving parts and hardware that need to be maintained, and because it hinges to one side, casement windows are not very wide.
Awning Windows
These windows work well on the upper levels of the home because they hinge at the top and open outward, just like an awning. Awning windows are easy to operate, but are difficult to clean. They do allow in ventilation, and keep the rain out, however they do protrude outside and do not work well along walkways or patios.
Sliding Windows
Sliding windows are similar to double hung windows, if they were on their side. Typically, a sliding window has two sashes that move horizontally, or side to side on a track, and overlap one another. Sliding windows can also have one fixed and one sliding sash. These windows provide excellent light and ventilation as well as being affordable. Sliding windows are easy to open, easy to clean and easy to maintain. These windows also do not protrude into the space of the home or outside, but just like double hung windows, you can only open half of the window at a time.
Picture Windows
Picture windows are fixed windows that do not open, but can be almost any shape or size. Because they are non-operable, they are the most cost effective windows if you want to open up an expansive view in your home. Picture windows can provide you with ample natural light and easily become the focal point in any room. However you will not get any ventilation with a picture window. A common option to help with the ventilation issue is to border picture windows with double hung windows, giving you the best of both worlds.
Bay and Bow Windows
The difference between a bay and bow window is that a bay window typical is a series of four or more windows set on a cure, when a bay window has a non-operable center piece flanked by two operable windows. Regardless of which type, these multi-section windows are a beauty to behold and will steal the show in any room. Bay and bow windows do add square footage to your home, allow in tons of natural light and are typical good for ventilation. However, these windows are more expensive and any breakdowns could require replacement of the entire unit.
