3 Ways to Prep a Propane Tank for Winter

1. Keep it Full

Propane converts from a gas to a nonusable liquid at -44 degrees, which most climates won’t see. Still, low tank pressure can cause regulator and draw problems in any season. To make sure this isn’t an issue in the cold season when you most need your propane, keep your tank full. This will also minimize the likelihood of problematic moisture infiltrating the lines or tank.

2. Have a Heat Source

For small tanks, it’s possible to wrap the tank—not the valve or regulator—with a specially designed electric blanket during cold spells. Secure the blanket, covering as much of the tank as possible. Set the blanket on a medium setting. Slowly open the regulator. Leave it partially closed to avoid freezing. When you aren’t using the propane tank or after the cold spell has passed, remove the blanket. Industrial heating wraps may be available for bigger tanks. Never use an open flame as a heat source, as propane is extremely flammable. 

3. Protect the Tank

For climates that regularly receive snow and cold temperatures, it may be a good idea to build a protective area for the tanks, or at least a cover to keep off snow and ice. Exposure to elements can decrease the performance of the tank components over time.
