Are you planning your engagement or senior photos? As exciting as it is to commemorate these special occasions with pictures, many people feel self-conscious in the photography studio. Figuring out the right poses—especially for your hands—can be challenging. Fortunately, the guide below outlines some go-to moves.

What to Do With Your Hands When at the Photography Studio

1. At Your Side

Stand up tall, resting your arms and hands casually by your side while you look at the camera. To make yourself appear longer and leaner, pull your shoulders back and your elbows slightly behind yourself. Leave your hands in a loose grip next to your outer thighs, or gently touch the fabric of your pants.

2. In Your Pockets

Consider placing your hands loosely in your jeans, pants, or jacket. If you have a dress with casual pockets, you can use these also. However, don't make a fist since this can add bulk to your hips. You can also experiment with having one hand in a pocket and the other held by your side.

3. Around Someone You Love

If you are taking photos with another person, feel free to interact with them. Candid shots are beautiful, so don't be afraid to walk with, talk to, or hug the friends or family members you are with. For instance, a mother-daughter shot could involve a mom standing behind the daughter with her hands on the daughter's shoulders. The daughter could have her hands folded casually in her lap. Be sure you both feel comfortable since this will have a direct impact on the final image.
