A picture is worth a thousand words. Often, the goal of taking these images is to preserve a moment in time, whether you want a solo portrait in your cap and gown or business suit or a couples photo celebrating an engagement or pregnancy. To ensure that you look your best, consider what poses to adopt. Having a plan before arriving at the photography studio can help the appointment go smoother and benefit the final results. The following guide focuses on seated poses.

Advice for Individuals

Individual photos bring attention to the person and their relationship with the background. For front-facing images, sit upright on furniture to appear confident or lean forward to look relaxed. If you want to show off a profile, try sitting sideways or looking over your shoulder or at the ceiling.

When on a chair, cross your legs. When sitting on the floor or spread out on a couch, facing the side, you can stretch your legs out in front of you or bend one at the knee. These poses complement your stable upper body without drawing attention away from your smile.

Try sitting on chairs or benches of various heights, as this can affect how your torso appears in images. This way, you will leave the photography studio with several possible options.

Advice for Couples

Couples photo shoots often emphasize the relationship between the two individuals. Facing one another can show a deep connection, which is why it is commonly used in wedding photos. You can also sit together with your backs to the camera while snuggling up or holding hands. Alternatively, one person can stand behind the couch or chair and hug their seated partner from behind.

In addition, don't be afraid to sit on one another. Holding a person in your lap, crossing your legs over theirs, or having them sit between your outstretched legs creates interesting connections and visual lines. Most importantly, if you have fun with the experience, that will translate to the camera.
