We all have at least one memory of looking at a photo and thinking, "I wish they'd gotten my good side." While it might make sense that we would have a good side, considering that no face is perfectly symmetrical, it's hard to see which is which just by looking in the mirror, which is why this "good versus bad side" preference comes up in the photography world. Before your next shoot with a photographer, try some of these tips to find your best side so that you're happy with the final results.

How to Help the Photographer Find Your "Best" Side

1. Take a Few Practice Pictures at Home

Set your phone or camera on a self-timer, and stand back. Take a photo with your left side facing the camera more and vice versa. While the quality might not be the same as that of a professional photographer, you may be able to see which side is more flattering. You'll determine your side simply by looking and deciding which photo elicits a warmer inner response. Typically, the more defined or "chiseled" side of your face is the most flattering.

2. Chew Consciously

Next time you're eating a meal, pay attention to which side you chew on the most. Is it your right or left? It might sound like a silly thing to pay attention to, but your dominant chewing side is likely the more defined side of your face. Since the muscles work more while eating, your jaw and cheekbone will be accentuated more, proving to be a favorable angle for your photographer.

3. Turn That Face Upside Down

Since it's hard to see your best side simply by looking in a mirror, try to look at your face in an unconventional way. Take a selfie looking at the camera head-on with your phone flipped upside down.

Since you're gaining a new perspective on your face, you'll be able to see which features are larger and smaller. For instance, if your left eye is a little smaller, you'll want that eye farther from the camera to create the illusion that its size is due to distance from the lens.
