Many people ask their photographer to get their “good side,” which translates to finding angles, perspective, and lighting that complement your facial features. However, if you already have a sense of what suits you, you’ll likely find it easier to pose and get flattering shots. Here are some factors to consider when sitting for portraits.

How to Determine Which Is Your Best Side

1. Look at Each Side Separately

Many people prefer one side to the other because faces are naturally asymmetrical. Look at each on its own by covering one side of your face with durable writing paper, taking a selfie, and repeating with the other side. Your best side is likely the one with the more defined jawline and lifted eye, making you look sculpted and alert.

2. Consider Science

photographerWhen humans express emotions, the right brain hemisphere controls the left side of the face. Studies suggest that the left side of the face is more aesthetically pleasing because it displays more emotion. During sessions with a photographer, try angling it toward the camera to see if you like the results.

3. Analyze Individual Features

First, look at your eyes to determine which one is bigger and assign a point to that side. Next, check the jawline, and give a point to the side that looks narrower. For your nose, assign a point to the side that looks smaller or less distracting. Finally, add a point in favor of the side that has fewer blemishes, scars, or other marks. Try featuring the side with the most points in front of the camera.

4. Use Lighting Strategically

Your nose should face toward the brightest light source to prevent shadows from obscuring your facial features. However, if you want to make your face look narrower, ask your photographer to light you from above and below, accentuating the cheekbones. If you wish to smooth out wrinkles and blemishes, request a brighter fill light to reduce contrast.
