Whenever anyone attempts a new sport, there is always a learning curve that involves plenty of successes and failures. For young people, the setbacks and disappointments that are natural parts of the process can be intimidating. Fortunately, if your child is playing baseball, there are several ways you can boost their confidence and restore their commitment to their chosen sport.

How to Help a Young Athlete Feel More Confident

1. Heap on the Praise

Give the young athlete in your life plenty of positive feedback and words of encouragement. Young people start believing in themselves when they see that others believe in them. Always praise their efforts no matter the outcome, whether they knocked the baseball out of the park or struck out each time they were at bat. This attention helps them see the value in participating, confronting new challenges, and trying again.

2. Start Small

You might think that your child has the athleticism and agility to be the next greatest athlete. However, every famous player started with the basics. Have your child start with beginner's classes so they can learn all the necessary foundational skills. As a result, they will be better equipped to handle the increasing complexities of their sport. If you start them off with training or classes beyond their skill level, they may get frustrated and lose confidence.

3. Maintain Expectations

Your child may expect to succeed every time they play. However, it's also healthy to set realistic expectations. Explain that they aren't going to pitch a perfect game the first few times. By adjusting their expectations, they will be able to enjoy the experience, the competition, and the fun without focusing too much on the outcome. They will feel more confident and at ease as they build their skills, connect with teammates, and discover who they are as athletes.
