4 Baseball Hitting Drills for Kids
When your child or teen wants to polish their baseball batting skills, you’ll have many different options to help them get where they want to be. Many drilling practices teach how to control strength, agility, and striking levels while still being great exercises. Here’s a list of drills to help teach your young athlete how to properly hit the ball.
Which Baseball Drills Can Help Your Child Athelete?
1. Two-Tee Technique
Set up two tees and align them right next to each other. Both should be the same height. The hitter has to successfully strike the second tee without contacting the first one. This drill helps hitters practice swinging in different parts of their strike zone.
2. Eyes Closed
Hitting drills where the batter closes their eyes can be done two different ways. In the first, the pitcher calls out their pitch, at which point the batter quickly opens their eyes. During this time, the pitcher carefully tosses a softball into the batter’s strike zone. This forces the batter to increase their reaction time by finding and hitting the baseball at the moment it’s coming.
In the second, you can set a batting tee in the strike zone and have the batter close their eyes to take a swing. This technique allows them to time and visualize swings more carefully.
3. Two-Ball Trick
This drill focuses on target concentration and hand-eye coordination. The pitcher has two different-colored balls. They toss both to the hitter. However, they only call the color of one of those two balls, and the hitter has to react quickly to hit the correct ball.
4. Fence Drill
Also known as the “backside barrier drill,” the practice eliminates the leeway in a player’s swing by confining it to a specific area. However, this practice requires a backstop or fence. A player must face the fence and stand one bat's length away from it, with the knob just touching their stomach. The objective is to swing and hit the ball without hitting the fence. This technique also helps limit unnecessary head and body movements by limiting the moving space.
