Baseball season isn’t over yet, but your shoulder could be hinting at an early-season removal. Shoulder pain isn’t uncommon for pitchers, particularly right after a game. Though post-game shoulder pain is usually nothing serious, it can make even the little tasks seem more taxing. If soreness is getting in the way of your perfect pitch, try these three top strategies to ease shoulder soreness.

3 Ways to Soothe Shoulder Pain

1. Bring Down the Inflammation

BaseballInflammation is the body’s response to injury and is manifested in swelling, redness, and pain of the affected body part. If you’re injured while playing baseball or another sport, your body reacts by swelling as it works to heal. Inflammation leads to the discomfort you’re experiencing. The application of a cold compress is one of the best ways to reduce inflammation. Apply an ice pack to the area as soon as possible after it becomes aggravated. Wrap the ice pack in a cloth and do not apply the ice directly to your skin as this can damage the tissue. Keep the ice pack in place for up to 20 minutes and repeat three to four times a day. Anti-inflammatory medication can also provide some pain relief. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for dosage.

2. Apply Compression

Wrap an elastic medical bandage around your shoulder to apply pressure to the area. Not only is compression another method to help reduce inflammation, but it also limits the range of movement. Compression stabilizes the affected muscle and decreases muscular vibration. Keep the bandage tight enough to apply pressure, but not too constricting. If you experience any tingling or numbness, you’ll need to loosen the bandage. Try this for two to three days, but if the soreness doesn’t ease up, see a doctor to rule out serious injury.

3. Rest

Pain indicates that something is wrong, and continuing to use the shoulder could lead to further damage to the area. Playing with a sore shoulder also causes you to compensate and overuse other muscles. As you do so, it increases the chance of causing injury to other areas. Take some time to allow your shoulder to heal. If this means sitting on the bench for a baseball game or two, it’s better than causing damage that can keep you out of the game even longer. There is no set number of hours or days for rest periods, so consult your doctor and listen to your body.
