When your kids start baseball training, they’ll be excited to tell you all about it. They will learn some baseball terms from their coaches that you’ve likely never heard before. Learn some of the most common phrases below for the next time you cheer at a game.

Must-Know Baseball Terminology

1. RBI

RBI, or runs batted in, is referred to as a “ribby.” A batter earns this when their time on the plate is credited with a scored run. If they hit a home run with all the bases loaded, they will earn four RBIs.

2. Stolen Base

If a baserunner takes a base that they aren’t entitled to while the pitcher is throwing, this is a stolen base. This sneaky move can also happen when a catcher is throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

3. Bases Loaded

baseballThe bases are loaded when there are baserunners on all four bases at the same time. If the next batter on the plate hits a home run, all four runners will score. This is the most amount of runs possible in one play and is called a grand slam.

4. Double Play

This indicates that two offensive players have been ruled as “out” on the same play. It is also known as “doubled up,” “turned two,” or “pitcher’s best friend.” A double play is likely when there’s a ground ball with a baserunner on first. The defense may throw the ball to second base to get the first baserunner out, then throw it to first base to tag the batter out.

5. Run Down

This occurs when a baserunner is stuck between two bases as the defense tries to tag them out. This moment is also known as a “pickle.”
