Work-related stress can be overwhelming when it is layered on top of stress related to family, money, and relationships. However, there are steps you can take to help ameliorate your stress levels at work and at home. Check out these three tips to handle stress in the workplace and at home in coordination with your family medicine provider.

How to Manage Work-Related Stress

1. Establish Boundaries

If you work remotely, you have the ability to technically work 24/7. However, you are not paid to be "on" all of the time and need to turn your computer off when work hours are over. If your boss is giving you work after hours, you should speak to human resources. This work stress can easily lead to stress at home when you are working remotely, as the delineation between clocking in and out begins to blur.

2. Breathe

You'd be amazed by how much your breathing can actually regulate your body. Start with both feet on the floor and close your eyes. Take a deep breath in through your nose and out of your mouth. Imagine you are in a relaxing place and stay there for a few minutes. You can do this right at your desk, during lunch, or in between calls. If you are having trouble relaxing, contact your family medicine provider and they can direct you to a therapist. A mixture of breathing and psychotherapy helps to calm the nervous system and regulate your blood pressure to lower stress levels.

3. Eat Lunch

When you're stressed and overwhelmed, it's common to skip lunch and continue working. However, this can bother your cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone. Make sure you take time to eat a well-balanced lunch and take a break during your lunchtime in order to relax, in order to lower your stress levels in the afternoon.  If you are struggling with your eating patterns, reach out to your family medicine provider to discuss healthy ways of eating.
