It’s common for contact-wearers to, either accidentally or on purpose, fall asleep with their contacts still on. However, it’s important that you know why it’s not safe for your eyes to sleep with contact lenses. Even contacts that are approved for sleep can increase your chance of developing an infection. Keep reading to learn the reasons why you should take your contacts out at bedtime every night.

Why Is Sleeping With Contacts Dangerous?

1. They Can Scratch the Eye

When you sleep, it’s easy for you to rub your eyes more than normal or rub your face on the pillows. It’s possible that when you are rough on your eyes, the contact can dislodge from the correct location and even scratch the eye, causing pain and damage. Contact your eye doctor immediately if you wake up with a scratched eye.

2. You Can Develop Bacterial Keratitis

Bacterial keratitis is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the cornea. If this infection isn’t treated quickly and properly by a professional, it can cause the person to lose part or all of their vision. When the eye doesn’t have time to breathe without contact lenses, it is more likely to develop an infection.

3. Increases Risk of Fungal Infection

Other infections are also possible when you sleep with your contacts on. Fungal keratitis is a fungal infection that can develop. Acanthamoeba keratitis is an infection that is caused by an amoeba that can be found in bodies of water, like a lake or a hot tub. This infection is also common when you wear your contact lenses in the pool or shower.
