Having your eyes regularly checked is not only essential for maintaining good vision and preventing ocular diseases, but it can also provide insight into your overall health. Ophthalmologists are often able to detect signs of potential problems occurring elsewhere in the body based on the condition of the eyes. Here are some common health issues revealed through eye exams.

What Can Your Eyes Tell You About Your Overall Health?

1. High Blood Pressure

Blood vessel damage, including leaking, hardening, swelling, or narrowing, can be very telling to an ophthalmologist. In many cases, this is evidence of high blood pressure. Aside from distorted vision, it means patients are in jeopardy of experiencing poor cardiovascular health. Timely treatment is vital for reducing the possibility of a heart attack.

2. Diabetes

People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. This is when blood vessels in the retina weaken and start to leak, causing blurred vision. If left unaddressed, it can eventually lead to blindness. When caught early during an eye exam, the condition can be treated to help avoid permanent vision loss. Patients also have a better chance of getting their blood sugar under control to prevent future problems.

3. High Cholesterol

When a person’s cholesterol levels are abnormally high, fat deposits can begin to form a white or gray ring around the cornea. This shows an increased potential for complications associated with heart disease, such as stroke. Though it’s not unusual to see these deposits in older patients, it’s particularly important for those under 40 to get their cholesterol tested if a ring is present.

4. Liver Damage

In healthy people, the eye tissue is white. Should it turn yellow, this is referred to as jaundice, which is a clue that the liver could be damaged or inflamed. It generally means the liver is producing an excessive amount of bilirubin, the yellowish pigment found in bile, and not breaking it down properly. Liver issues can arise from a virus, autoimmune disorder, or alcohol abuse.
