Propane remains one of the safest energy sources currently available. Unlike electric power or natural gas, propane must be delivered to a tank on your property. Tanks are usually white and cylindrical in appearance. If you are new to this energy source, learn what you need to know about propane service for safe and efficient use.

Contact the Company

Whether you own or rent your home, you will need to know which company provides propane delivery. Check the inside and outside of the tank for a sticker identifying the company providing this important service, and call said company if you own your home to set up a delivery schedule. If you rent your home, contact your landlord to find out if you need to schedule deliveries or if service will continue uninterrupted. It is wise to be home for your first delivery so the service person can show you what the gas smells like. This is very important in the event of a leak. Propane is actually odorless; however, ethyl mercaptan is added to create a “rotten egg” odor for safety reasons.

Avoid Landscaping Too Close to Your Tank

propaneYou may be tempted to place shrubbery or other landscaping/hardscaping elements around your propane tank to disguise it. This is generally not recommended, as shrubbery and related elements too close to tanks are potential fire hazards. If you must landscape around the tank, place organic or inorganic mulch at least six feet between the tank and the shrubs or fencing to prevent flames from reaching the propane source.

Provide Helpful Information

Alert your propane company to anything that can interfere with safe and easy delivery, such as low-hanging power lines that can get caught on the tank truck. Let the company know about any sprinkler systems in use, as well as the location of your septic tank, if applicable. You do not want the truck to put extra weight on the tank and potentially crush it.
