As the weather warms up and the sun starts shining, it’s time to pull out the grill and enjoy the season with friends and family. The summer heat may be enjoyable, but it can be dangerous if you aren’t using your fuel tanks correctly. Follow the guide below to enjoy propane-fueled cookouts all season long.

Propane Safety Advice for Summer

1. Conduct a Damage Inspection

Before you fire up your grill for the first time, check both the barbecue and the propane tank for signs of damage. Check the hoses for cracking, leaks, or holes. Clean any grime off the grates and drip trays. Inspect the tank for signs of corrosion, excessive rusting, or dents. Don’t use anything that looks damaged.

2. Protect Against the Heat

propaneGas expands when it gets hot.  Always store your tank out of direct sunlight. If you are transporting it by car, never leave it in the car without the air conditioning on, as the vehicle can quickly heat up in the summer sun.

3. Be Vigilant Against Leaks

Always cap your tank when it isn’t in use, even if you believe it’s empty. Even a small amount of gas leaked in a confined area can be dangerous. Propane contains an additive designed to help you detect leaks; if you ever smell a scent like rotten eggs, move the tank to a safe location and refrain from using it.
