Now that spring has arrived, you’re likely spending more time outdoors and using your propane grill, fire pit, and space heater to enjoy your backyard. Before you fire everything up for a barbecue, though, take a few precautions to ensure your family is safe.
How to Use Propane Safely
1. Inspect Your Gas Tanks
Before using last year’s propane cylinder that’s been sitting outside all winter, thoroughly inspect it before firing up the grill. Check the seal for cracks or missing parts and observe the cylinder itself for rust, dents, or other damage.
If the tank isn't in good shape, replace it before using the gas. If you have any questions about your cylinder’s condition, have it inspected by a professional propane distributor.
2. Check for Leaks
Although leaking gas typically smells like rotten eggs, sometimes a smell additive can dissipate the unpleasant odor. To detect an invisible leak, apply some soapy water or leak detection solution to the connection between the seal and regulator.
Slowly open the valve and watch for air bubbles. If you see air coming from the seal, you have a leak that needs fixing.
3. Store Propane Correctly
If you aren’t using propane cylinders right away, store them properly. Never keep them in your basement, garage, or shed. Keep them outdoors in a secure location with plenty of ventilation. Invest in a tank foot, a secure base that prevents cylinders from falling over.
4. Turn Off Propane When Not in Use
When you’re done grilling, turn off the burners and the gas supply. Unlike your indoor gas appliances, grills are not designed to operate with continuous gas pressure.
Turning off the gas valve reduces the risk of a dangerous leak. Turn off each burner control knob before shutting the valve.
5. Light Gas Appliances Correctly
When lighting your propane grill, check that the control knobs are in the OFF position and the lid is open before turning on the gas. Let the gas fill the valve system before igniting the burners. If the burners don’t ignite right away, turn the knobs off and let the gas clear before trying again.
