4 Types of Golf Clubs & When to Use Them
If you've just purchased a new set of clubs, you're probably anxious to hit the golf course and try them out. First — if you're new to the world of golf— acquaint yourself with the most common types of clubs and learn when to use them. Below are a few tips to help you with this process.
When to Use Each Golf Club
1. Drivers & Fairway Woods
Drivers and fairway woods can both gain a lot of distance off the tee. A driver is the longest club in the bag, which can sometimes make it challenging for newbies to handle. Instead, try a three-wood for more control. Seasoned golfers can also achieve remarkable distance with a three-wood or a five-wood.
2. Irons
Irons provide enhanced control as you approach the green. In general, the lower the number of the iron, the more distance it provides. For example, a two-iron hits an average of 105 to 210 yards, so use this when you're farther from the green. A nine-iron, by contrast, hits about 55 to 135 yards, so this is ideal when you're closer. There are also hybrid clubs that combine woods and irons and can replace the longer irons that you may not have much use for on the golf course.
3. Wedges
Wedges are also irons, but they're designed for high-trajectory shots at lower distances. There are a variety of wedges, including pitching wedges, which offer greater range when approaching the green. Sand wedges help you escape a bunker with ease.
4. Putters
Putters help you sink the shot once you hit the green. If you don’t use the correct club as you approach the hole, you can end up taking a considerable number of swings to drive the ball home. This, of course, results in a higher score. A putter should always correspond to your height, typically between 33 and 33.5 inches for men and between 31 to 32.5 inches for women.
