If you have an unused masonry fireplace, you can convert it into a gas system with the addition of an insert before winter arrives. Homeowners appreciate gas fireplaces for their continuous heat, ease of use, and environmental friendliness. Below, learn more about gas fireplace inserts, how they work, and their benefits.

What Is a Gas Fireplace Insert?

A gas insert transforms a traditional fireplace that burns wood into a gas system that produces heat and flame through the burning of fuel. A masonry fireplace consists of a large wall opening with a flue attached overtop to direct heat and smoke out of the home and up through the chimney. The insert is customized to fit the size of the opening and connects to the existing flue and chimney. An insert is primarily comprised of a firebox with a steel shell.

How Do They Work?

There are two types of gas fireplace inserts, and each one works a bit differently. A direct-vent system relies on the principle of warm air rising to create negative pressure, which pulls in cold air for combustion and then vents directly outside through the chimney.

A ventless system doesn't require vents because it aims to burn gas more cleanly; ventless systems, however, are illegal in Minnesota residences due to the possible risk of depleting oxygen levels indoors.

What Are the Benefits?

A gas insert lets you alter your existing masonry fireplace into a gas-fueled one without any major home renovations. Without having to dismantle and build a new system from scratch, the installation process is much faster and far less disruptive to the household.

Gas fireplaces are also easier to maintain than their woodburning counterparts because there is no ash or creosote accumulation to clean up. You also don't need to chop and haul wood or struggle to get a fire lit. All it takes is a push of a button to start the flames and fill the room with the warm coziness of a blazing fire in the hearth.
