On a frigid winter evening, nothing’s more soothing than sitting near a fireplace’s crackling warmth. While everyone is enjoying this popular holiday gathering spot, it’s important to follow some essential safety rules. Here are several for keeping your home protected from smoke and fire hazards.

What Are the Top Safety Tips for Fireplaces During the Holidays?

1. Hang Stockings With Care

It’s become a tradition in many households to hang decorative stockings on or near a fireplace mantle. Unfortunately, flames and embers can jump high enough to ignite stockings. Avoid hanging them close by. Instead, choose an opposite wall, shelf, or another structure out of reach of your fireplace.

2. Keep Trees & Gifts at Safe Distances

fireplacesChristmas trees, wreaths, and other holiday decorations should always be placed away from a fireplace. It only takes seconds for flammable items to combust and spread onto the nearby furniture or carpet.

As with stockings, place trees and gifts on the opposite side of where a fireplace is located. Consider putting them in another room to help minimize fire hazards.

3. Exercise Proper Trash Disposal

Resist the temptation of tossing trash in your burning fireplace. Holiday wrapping paper, boxes, tape, and other materials may be flammable and combust.

After the season’s festivities are over, don’t get rid of your Christmas tree by placing it in a fireplace. If the wood hasn’t been previously treated or completely dried, it can emit dangerous fumes, smoke, and spark a fire.

4. Keep an Extinguisher Close

It’s strongly advised to have an extinguisher within close reach if there’s a fireplace in the home. Make sure several adults or teenagers know how to properly use the device. Fire extinguishers should also be periodically tested.

To know if yours is in good working condition, check that the pressure gauge is in the green section. This will typically indicate the device is ready. If it’s in the red section, have it inspected at your local fire department for any signs of damage.
