Checking tire pressure is an important auto maintenance task. When a tire suffers a puncture or damage to the "bead"—the edge around the middle that contacts the wheel—the pressure inside it can drop, leading to problems. Below is an introduction to tire pressure and why it matters.

Why Is Checking Tire Pressure an Essential Auto Maintenance Task?

Proper tire pressure is essential for proper automotive handling, safety, and fuel economy. Under-inflated tires cause the car to handle sluggishly, while over-inflation can make the ride feel bumpier and less smooth. Meanwhile, under-inflated tires wear out more quickly and need more frequent replacement, while over-inflation creates an increased risk of blowouts on the road. Low tire pressure can lead to a flat, which could leave you stranded away from home.

Finally, under-inflation increases the amount of friction the tire experiences and thus reduces fuel efficiency. Your gas mileage therefore suffers, and you pay more at the pump each week.

How Do You Check Tire Pressure?

First, check the manufacturer-recommended tire pressure for your vehicle. It is not listed on the tire—that number is simply the tire's maximum rated inflation limit. To find the recommended tire pressure, check your vehicle's owners manual or the sticker inside the driver's door.

Remove the valve stem cap and use a tire pressure gauge to determine the current pressure. Fill the tire to the recommended number of pounds per square inch (psi) using an air compressor. Use the gauge to check it, occasionally. If you overfill the tire, depress the needle in the center of the valve stem to release some pressure. When the tire has the correct pressure, replace the valve stem cap and check the next tire.
