Cars make noise as they run, so you’re likely familiar with what yours sounds like when it’s functioning normally. If you notice unusual sounds, then something may be out of place or broken, and you might need an auto mechanic to fix the problem. Here are five examples of issues that cause extra noises in your vehicle.

Why You May Hear Extra Car Noises

1. Worn Brake Pads

Sounds like grinding or squealing while braking usually indicate heavy brake pad wear. Over time, brake pads grind down and become less effective, requiring harder stops. Repeated force on the pads can erode them entirely, leaving only scraping metal parts. Before your braking system receives permanent damage, have an auto mechanic replace the pads.

2. Damaged Accessory Belt

If a sharp squealing occurs during startup, there may be an issue with the car’s accessory belts. These belts run on startup, activating a number of accessories a car uses mid-drive, including power steering, air conditioning compressors, and alternators. Noises under the hood are difficult to pinpoint, so let a professional find and swap out the damaged piece.

3. Broken Drive Axle

Axles bear much of a vehicle’s weight and use power from the transmission to rotate the wheels. Without repair, the wheel on the side of the damaged axle can't turn, brake, or even drive properly.

4. Car Battery Issue

Battery failure presents many symptoms, including dimmed lights and a recognizable low growl during startup. A failing battery may be leaking, corroded, or worn down with age. When a battery stops powering the engine properly, contact an auto mechanic to get it tested or replaced.

5. Damaged Ventilation Flap

If you notice loud flapping sounds while using the air vents, they’re most likely the result of a broken flap. Though ignoring a damaged ventilation flap won’t harm your vehicle, it’s still an inconvenience. The flap may be torn or worn out and will impact proper airflow in your vehicle, so have it replaced.
