Millions of homes and businesses depend on private wells for their water, and well pumps are a vital part of these complex systems that deliver a reliable supply of groundwater directly to the tap. Yet, like any mechanical device, they require regular maintenance to function properly. The following three well pump service tips can keep your system running smoothly.

Well Pump Maintenance

1. Listen to Your Pump

When a well pump works correctly, it makes very little noise. You'll likely hear its controls click on and off, a soft hum as the motor engages, and the sound of water pouring into the storage tank. However, unusual noises such as clicking, gurgling, banging, or changes in the pitch and volume of the motor's sound can indicate it's time for well pump service.

If you hear the pump cycling more often than usual, or at times when water is not being used, such as in the middle of the night, it might be due to a valve leak or water-logged tank. Any new or unusual noises from your pump should prompt an immediate inspection by a well drilling contractor to identify and repair minor issues before they become serious problems and possibly cause a disruption in your water delivery.

2. Visually Inspect It

Any time you can identify issues with a system sooner rather than later prevents them from becoming costly malfunctions. The same is true of your water well components. Checking your water well at least once a month will help you notice any issues with it so you can secure repairs early.

If you have a jet pump system, it's located above the ground, allowing for easy inspection. You can check the seal to see if it is leaking. To check anything else, such as the impellers, you would have to take the pump apart.

While a submersible pump is located underground and not available for visual inspection, the pressure tank is often situated in the basement or another accessible area. You can inspect it for leaks or rust. If you find a leak, you should contact a well drilling contractor to repair it promptly since a damaged pressure tank can lead to a damaged well pump.

3. Clean the Cooling Fans

Jet pumps have fans that circulate air around the motor to prevent overheating, since an overheated motor is susceptible to irreparable damage. Over time, the fan air holes can become clogged with debris that interrupts the airflow, but you can routinely clean the fan air holes  with a dry cloth to keep the motor cool and the air flowing.

Submersible pumps can also overheat if they cycle too frequently or too long. This "short cycling" is often caused by a leak in the pressure tank. To prevent irreparable damage to your pump, have a well drilling contractor repair or replace your tank if you notice leaks, rust, or corrosion.
