A functional auto lift is an integral component of any auto repair shop. Proper maintenance and lift inspection help ensure that it works well and won’t leave you in a sticky situation—like having a client’s car stuck on the machine after service. Here are regular maintenance steps to avoid breakdowns and costly repairs.

Daily Maintenance

lift inspectionEarly diagnosis is the key to preventing complicated system issues. Every morning, take the time to visually inspect the lift’s moving parts, hoses, and hydraulic connections. Check its up and down controls and emergency stop functions as well. The lift arms should be able to pivot and extend without difficulty.

Weekly Maintenance

At the end of every workweek, perform these routine maintenance steps to keep your lift in good condition:

  • Clean the surface by wiping away dirt, grease, and debris

  • Lubricate the pivot points and rollers

  • Check the hydraulic oil level and tighten any loose screws, nuts, and bolts.

It’s also a good practice to inspect the machine’s lifting capacity and full range of motion as you do the tasks above.

Monthly Maintenance

Every month, conduct a lift inspection to detect surface damage to the lift, such as dents or scratches. Along with that, take the time to do the following:

  • Make sure all the cables, columns, and drive screws are lubricated as necessary

  • Check floor anchor bolts and retighten if needed

  • Check the torque of pivot pins and bolts

  • Remove the protective covers and wipe down dirt and grease build-up

Yearly Maintenance

For optimum performance, it’s best to have a professional auto lift inspection at least once a year or as per the manufacturer’s recommendation. Aside from the assessment, there are also annual maintenance steps that need to be performed by a trained professional:

  • Change hydraulic hoses

  • Replace rollers and chains

  • Change sheaves and cables

  • Rebuild or replace hydraulic cylinders and air cylinders as needed
